A Quick Guide to Acoustic Guitars

Dreadnought, OM, Grand Auditorium… it’s easy to get lost in the terms describing acoustic guitars. Let’s take a deep dive to make it clear out once and for all.

Body shapes:

  • Dreadnought: Big body, bold sound, and deep bass like the one produced by our Emperor or Bonefire. Ideal for strummers who like their sound to fill the room.
  • OM (Orchestra Model):  Balanced tone, comfortable shape, great for fingerstyle and expressive playing. Simply a perfectly designed guitar, like our Empress.
  • Auditorium: The auditorium has a medium-sized body, which is smaller and thinner than a dreadnought. The sound is balanced in both treble and bass, making it ideal for fingerstyle playing.
  • Grand Auditorium: The all-rounder. Slightly larger than an auditorium and a little smaller than a dreadnought but with a full voice and great projection perfectly embodied by the Daily.
  • Round shoulder: Also known as slope or curved shoulders like our Every, round shoulder acoustic guitars are based on dreadnoughts and as such, they produce rich sound with beautiful bass. The difference in shape is often just preference-based, as some guitarists find them easier to play.
  • Jumbo: Jumbo guitars are the largest and heaviest acoustic guitars, producing strong bass and loud sound. The downside is that they can be less comfortable to play, especially while standing.
  • Mini Acoustic Guitars: Mini acoustics are not only a good choice for children, but make great travel guitars. They have a shorter scale length and come in various standard acoustic shapes (dreadnought, jumbo, etc.) in sizes 3/4 or ⅞, like our Street.

Tonewoods:

If you’re new to the acoustic world, think of it like picking your favorite genre – your guitar’s “tonewood mix” will set the mood for everything you play. Henry’s mostly uses following tonewoods:

  • Spruce gives brightness and clarity.
  • Mahogany adds warmth and midrange punch.
  • Rosewood brings richness and deep bass.
  • Ebony makes your playing feel fast and silky.

Guitar Parts:

  • Cutaway: the curved section on the upper part of the guitar body that lets you reach the higher frets more easily. It’s perfect for solos or melodic playing where you need full access to the neck.
  • Nomex Honeycomb: A synthetic core material placed between two layers of wood in a Double Top. It reduces weight and increases stiffness, giving the guitar a louder sound.
  • Bracing: The internal wooden framework that supports the top of the guitar and shapes its sound. Henry’s usually uses Special Scalloped X Bracing, which reduces the weight and helps to produce a richer, louder sound.
  • Fretboard: The long wooden surface on the neck where you press the strings.
  • Headstock: The top part of the guitar neck that holds the tuning pegs.
  • Pickguard: A thin protective plate on the guitar body that prevents scratches from strumming or picking.
  • Truss Rod: A metal rod inside the neck that allows precise adjustment of neck curvature, keeping the guitar playable under varying string tensions and climates. Henry’s using dual-action truss rods, which correct both forward bow and backbow.

Henry’s Daily – Built for Everyday Playing

The Daily Line comes in both purely acoustic and electro-acoustic versions, so you can choose the setup that fits your playing style.

Besides this distinction, the line contains two different sets of guitars Daily and Every. As you can probably tell from its name, Daily is the original acoustic and Every is a younger sister.

Both guitars share the same solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides, which give them a warm, natural tone with plenty of clarity. In short, they’re built from the same quality materials and crafted with the same attention to detail the main difference lies in how their body shapes impact the sound and feel. The Grand Auditorium body of the Daily feels sleek and focused, great for players who move between strumming and picking, whereas the Every comes in the Round Shoulder shape. Last but not least, the Daily features a 45mm nut width, while the Every is slimmer with 43mm.

Henry’s Monarch – Royal Sound for Refined Players

If the Daily is your reliable rhythm guitarist, the Monarch Line is your lead virtuoso refined, elegant, and always on point.

The OM24 Empress model is built with a solid Sitka spruce top and rosewood back and sides, giving it a vibrant projection with a warm, round finish. Its OM shape sits comfortably on your lap and delivers a balanced sound that’s ideal for expressive playing. Add a mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, and gold hardware, and you’ve got a guitar that feels as smooth as it looks. The natural gloss finish lets the tone breathe and makes sure all eyes are on you when you hit that first chord.

For players who want even more power, the D24 Emperor brings in the full dreadnought experience. An all-solid rosewood body with a solid Sitka spruce top creates a deep, booming voice with crystal-clear highs. With its scalloped X bracing, the D24 sings with dynamic range and authority. It’s a showstopper that looks and sounds majestic from the gold vintage tuners to the intricate rosette and natural wood finish.

Henry’s Street – Compact Body, Premium Soul

The Henry’s Street acoustic guitar takes the Grand Auditorium body and reimagines it into a compact, travel-friendly version without sacrificing tone. Its unique Double Top combines solid spruce with Nomex honeycomb, a high-end material known from carbon-fiber guitars. This structure makes the top lighter, stiffer, and more responsive, giving the guitar longer sustain, brighter projection, and better stability in any climate.

Built from mahogany, spruce, and rosewood, the Street shares the Monarch’s premium tonewoods but adds a modern twist. The Fishman Sonitone GT2 pickup delivers clear, natural sound on stage, while its bold design with gold hardware, visible wood grain, and floral neck relief adds a nice visual touch.
